How to be more Focused?

Staying focused sometimes is difficult especially with nowadays distractions from mobile phones and social media. Whether you are doing work or studying focusing is an important factor and requires a lot of concentration. I am a huge believer in productivity and how we spend our time. However, the lack of focus is an obstacle that we all face today.

The great news is that there are many techniques available that can help you focus and maintain your concentration. Here are my top 5 tips to you help stay focused.

1-         Avoid distractions

One of the main things that affect our focus is distractions. There are many types of distractions such as online distractions which includes social media and email. The second type is people where people message or even come and speak to you and distracting you from completing your task. Online distractions are addictive and the more you open tabs and respond the more you will spend time online. My advice to you is to limit how much time you are spending every day on online activities such as social media and emails. Stay off these sites until you have achieved your daily goals. The same with people when we are trying to focus. Don’t let people give you unnecessary tasks and asking you for favours. Choose wisely where you want to do work or study in order to stay focused.

2-         Set goals with deadlines

You have to know what you want to achieve and what are your goals. Make each goal clear with purpose. Make a list of your goals and what you need to achieve with deadlines. It is a great way to control procrastination and distractions when you know that you have limited time to finish your tasks. Make sure that your goals and deadlines are realistic and reasonable to accomplish the task that you want to achieve. You can also break your task or goal into smaller and smaller goals so you can focus and easily achieve them. This will help you stay motivated, and you will be able to focus. Write down your ideas and thoughts are a good way to keep you motivated and achieve your goals. You can also write a to-do list of the unfinished tasks and how you will tackle them. Each time you complete your task you can cross it out and you will be amazed at how much you have accomplished in a day and weeks to comes.

3-         Choose your work area

Whether you are in the office or at home. It is important to choose where you are going to complete your tasks. A clean and tidy work or study place is a way of making your mind at ease. Your mind will be able to focus and concentrate. Stay organized and make sure that you declutter your workplace in order to increase your productivity and focus. Also, an organised workplace will help you organize your thoughts, and you will be able to focus on a single task.

4-         Quit multitasking

Multitasking is not an efficient way to finish work and will not help you focus on the task ahead.  Multitasking has negative effects on our brain and will drain our energy and make us feel tired quickly. Trying to do too many things at once, is not a way to be productive and it will deplete your concentration and focus. This will lead to other health issues such as stress and anxiety. Signal tasking on the other hand will help you focus, and your brain will function best. Don’t try and tackle a lot of tasks at once and break them into smaller single tasks that way you will be able to accomplish a lot in a day as well as you will feel great as you will be crossing those tasks out.

5-         Prioritise tasks

Focus on one thing that is important. When you start your day figure out what tasks are important and focus on them. Have a plan on what you are going to do. When you plan your tasks make sure that you choose the most 3 important tasks that you need to accomplish first at the beginning of your day. Make sure you take breaks as well. Set a timer when working for example work for 25 minutes then take 10 minutes break. Your brain won’t focus for long periods of time so make sure that you take a break and allow some time for your brain to recover. Also, turn off your phone and emails so won’t get distracted. Make it a habit that you are planning your day ahead and what you want to accomplish based on the priority of your tasks.

Let’s have a quick recap on how to stay focused. First, avoid distractions from social media and emails. Second, set smart goals with strict deadlines. Third, choose an organised and clean area to work in. Fourth, quit multitasking and only choose one task at a time. Lastly, prioritise your tasks from the most important to the least ones.
